Design Disruptors Movie

Today we saw the movie Distrupt. The movie was a very educational and entertaining. The key concept of the movie was centered around the idea of solving old problems with new inventions. During the course of the movie, we heard and saw the thinking processes of various companies such as Lyft, Spotify, AirBnb, Netflix, and Dropbox just to name a few. The movie also touched upon the different types of designs that take place during the processing of these apps or websites which is the visual design, interface design, user experience design and product design. With each design focusing on certain aspects such as user experience focuses on receiving feedback from the users so the designers can make their product easier to use. A few key information that I thought was very important to know throughout the movie was the idea that art is totally different than design for the fact that art is meant to bring questions and design is meant to bring solutions. Another key information is that we should learn to design for others instead of just for ourselves when working on a project meant for the people. Lastly and the most important was to go beyond the simple concepts of design and make things that can help change the world.

Hierarchy Lesson

In class we saw a video on Hierarchy. This video lesson was a great learning experience since I didn’t have any history of typography before this class. The video talked about how the position of the type is very important along with the understanding of the order of priority. With the type playing an important role, the key components to look at is the size, color and placement. The size always needs separation and always have exceptions. The color on the other hand plays a major role in type since the color can really keep the typograph connected or separated. Lastly, the placement is done solely based on how the design will be laid out. It’s standard for the placement to be placed horizontally but in some cases it’ll be placed vertical as seen on buildings. With all these three components taken into consideration, any design have have the perfect weight and balance.

Creative Inspirations: Kit Hinrichs

In class we watched a video on Creative Inspirations with Kit Hinrichs. This video was very educational and it went through a lot of details. He was able to inform me on how typography can tell a story and how important faces can be. Apparently, I was not aware that people's faces are a key part of communication and that’s why magazine companies uses faces of people on their covers since people like to look at people. Another key point I felt was very important from this video was the relationships of business and design. Overall, the best way to approach working for a business is to design what is best for the company. I also found out that the ideal way to handle a business is when they give the designer a problem to solve. This part of the movie helped a great deal since dealing with clients, especially giant companies can be really intimidating but these helpful tips will make it easier in the long run.
